CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Apollo Justice
Character Canon: Gyakuten Saiban / Ace Attorney
AU History:
((anything in this backstory can be altered to fit with others if/once the mentioned people (kristoph, shadi smith) join the game))
Apollo Justice was orphaned at a very young age when his parents failed to return from the wilderness. He remembers little to nothing about them, nor his origin, and was shuffled through various caretakers until his teenage years, when he was finally old enough to support himself.
Young Apollo was seen as somewhat of a troublemaker. It was less that he was actively rebelling against society, though, and more because he was a stubborn boy with strong ideals. His tendency towards being loudly, adamantly opinionated got him into all kinds of trouble and more than enough scuffling. The last fight he was in was a serious incident that landed him in community service. As he was able-bodied and young, most of his work involved cleaning and labor work for the Union's public buildings. One day, the church Apollo was assigned to was visited by the organization known as The Swords of the Savior, and, huddled in the audience as they performed, 13 year old Apollo had been inspired by their dedication towards upholding the law and faith. This event in his life ultimately influenced his decision towards joining their ranks.
Upon enrollment, Apollo was assigned to a well-known officer named Kristoph Gavin for his cadet training. When he was close to promotion, however, Apollo received a series of anonymous tips concerning his commanding officer, claiming he was not properly following the creed of the Savior and was instead using his power to extort information and eliminate 'unsavory' individuals.
Finding the tips suspicious, Apollo carefully investigated these claims himself and accidentally unearthed evidence proving his mentor's involvement regarding the disappearance of Trainer Shadi Smith, and he promptly informed the authorities. Gavin was arrested and is now being held in custody for a later trial, whereas Apollo himself was offered Gavin's position for his services. Apollo quietly declined, opting instead to take a short hiatus to let things calm down before he assumed active duty-- wanting to have his accomplishments be his own and not the result of what he deems a random fluke.
Canon Personality:
When you first meet Apollo in the games the first thing you notice is that he is beyond nervous and has an unfortunate tendency to being loud. Can you blame him, though? It's his first case, he's defending his idol, and, to top it all off, it's a murder in which he ends up indicting his mentor as the killer. When he's caught off guard it's obvious how antsy he can get-- he's easily flustered and tends to flounder about when he doesn't have his bearings. That being said, he does calm down rather quickly once he thinks things over, and then he shines with a bold, sometimes cocky confidence you wouldn't have expected unless you've witnessed it before. It's clear that he wholeheartedly believes in the law and fights to protect and uphold its principles with everything he has.
Apollo's catchphrase is a very loud, very emphatic, 'I'M FINE!' sometimes preceded by an introduction of himself. He uses this phrase to make himself feel better whenever he is feeling down or lonely-- if you say it convincingly enough, you might just believe it, right? He tends to put the needs of others before his own and will go through a lot before even beginning to think about himself. He's that guy-- the one that will always offer his shoulder to cry on but when it comes to his own troubles he'd rather bottle it up and deal with it on his own.
He's a rather serious, reserved individual who doesn't really take lightly to games and people who are not-quite-straightforward. He isn't a big fan of ostentatious or whimsical behavior, either. However, his dislike for flashy types does not mean he is not vain-- he takes great pride in his hair (spending at least an hour preparing it, sometimes) and can be surprisingly insecure about his appearance, and it is not difficult identifying his jealousy of others who are comfortable in their own skin (see: most of his conversations with/involving Prosecutor Klavier Gavin.)
When interacting with people, Apollo is generally polite and respectful, making sure to always properly address someone by their formal title if they have one, or with the appropriate honorific. If he's familiar with someone, however, he can tend to be very blunt and sarcastic. He can even occasionally behave in this manner to those he was hired to defend if they're particularly eccentric. Like previously mentioned, he isn't very fond of playing games and is often impatient with getting to the point of the matter. His serious nature was most likely adopted from his previous mentor, Kristoph, and he is often the one playing the 'straight guy' when it comes to joking around with the people around him. His actual sense of humor tends to be quite dry and punny-- he does not often say his jokes out loud, but he does think up plays on words quite frequently-- a lot of them involving his own name.
Despite his occasional prickliness, Apollo does have a kind and honest heart-- and anyone whose presence he can tolerate tends to eventually become someone he cares about. Trucy, for example, may get on his nerves, but he does genuinely care about her and worries frequently about her safety if he feels she is in trouble. It takes a long time for Apollo to consider someone a friend, but he's easily impressed and can tolerate quite a lot until he hits his breaking point with someone.
AU Deviation:
In terms of canon point I'm going to be playing as the equivalent of Apollo from the very beginning, fresh from his first trial. He's not quite aware of Phoenix Wright by name as of yet, but I'm sure that whatever work Phoenix is doing in this AU has influenced Apollo in his decisions, no matter how indirect or direct it may have been.
Instead of training to be a lawyer, Apollo Justice in this universe has taken a more hands-on approach to protect the people. Being able to preserve truth of the world and the people around you is much easier with Pokemon on your side, after all.
Canon Abilities:
In his actual story, Apollo has the ability to 'perceive' nervous tics that indicate when a person is lying, recalling a traumatic incident, or withholding information. His observational skills are so exponentially fine-tuned that he notices even the most miniscule things-- even the twitching of veins from a quickening pulse. His body subconsciously senses when people's tics appear even when he is not particularly looking for it, causing him to tense up and feel as if his bracelet (inherited from his mother who possessed the same ability) is tightening around his wrist. He uses his body's instinctive response to find exactly when a person is most nervous when talking to him by placing his hand upon his bracelet and carefully listening to / watching them while they give testimony.
Enlightened Abilities:
As an Enlightened in this AU, Apollo does not possess his perceiving skill, but is instead gifted with the Analyst ability.
Presently, his type affinity is Fighting. Apollo's hands and feet are coarse, rough, and calloused, as if he were seasoned beyond his years. He is also shockingly strong despite his relatively small build. His hands and feet also seem to be perpetually covered in a fine dusting of chalk when Apollo is not bandaging them up. He's kind of self-conscious about them and will often become a little excessively hostile or flustered when his condition is pointed out.
When Apollo hits a proper evolution level he will gain Flying as a second type-- making him look perpetually windswept and his clothes billowing as if he were an easy breezy beautiful cover girl . His agility will greatly improve when he is in combat, as well, and in some places he will begin to grow feathers.
Starter Pokémon: Cubone, LV4, Murkrow LV11
Notes/Special Considerations:
Apollo canonically inherits a bracelet from his mother who possesses the same Perceive ability that he does. It's made out of a special kind of metal that is particularly sensitive to heat, and thus can expand or contract to fit around a person's wrist. When people hide things either purposely or subconsciously from Apollo, he instinctively tenses up, and the bracelet, in turn, tightens around his wrist. He uses the bracelet's reactions to properly pinpoint exactly when a person is most agitated.
In this AU, it would be an Enhanced Item, instead, infused with the Psychic element. It'd function relatively the same, but instead of tightening around Apollo's wrist, it would send mental pulses through him that grow more insistent the closer he is to the contradiction. He doesn't completely understand how it functions or how it's activated yet, but he is aware that it isn't just a regular trinket.
SAMPLES
First-Person (substituted w/ questions-- read as if Apollo is being interviewed by a higher-ranked Sword officer)
-What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?
Something trustworthy, of course! And, er, independent. I mean, I don't know if I can really be taking care of anything, so I'd like for it to be able to handle itself on its own. I, uh, don't have a lot of room at home for that kind of thing, so...
(^not quite a lie but the above statement directly contradicts his starter choice, whom he adopted and bonded with specifically because it needed to be taken care of. the fact that he put aside what he wanted to help another instead is pretty significant to his character.)
-What area do you seek to explore? The peaceful forest, in search of new, previously overlooked discoveries; the uncharted caves, in search of the unknown; or the wildest of mountain terrain, in search of danger, adventure, and thrills?
Err... I don't know. I'm not that interested in adventuring, I guess? I just figured I'd be doing city patrols for now... [Suddenly, he balks.] N-not that I wouldn't want to for the Union!! I just didn't really think we'd be doing that kind of thing very often. If there was something to investigate, then, yeah, I'll be all for it, but... I, uh. Haha. Um. [Apollo scratches his head, looking sheepish.] Can... can I do this question over again? No, no, I'm fine, really! I'm fine! If I had to choose!! I'd probably, um, look in the mountains? You can see most everything from up there!
-What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?
To stay on the right path. Um, that sounded kind of weird, but... bear with me for a second. [Here, he presses a finger to his forehead, folding his arms over and holding his elbow, as if in deep thought.] Um. As a Sword, keeping other people on the right path is important, too, but if you lose your way, how can you guide other people, right? The whole reason our society is like this is because we lost sight of what was really important, so we need to work together to find just what that is. Or should be. Er. Does that make sense?
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
[Apollo looks up, pulling his hand away from his face. All his nervousness and jitters are gone and the expression on his face is fierce and determined.] Everything I could. Whatever I would want someone to do for me if I were missing, I'd do for them.
[And then just like that, it's gone. He's back to scratching his head.]
Um, if that makes sense. Sorry, I'm, haha, I'm kind of nervous.
Third-Person:
Apollo's pretty sure his legs are going to give out by the time he manages to wobble from his chair and out the door of the chief's office.
Get a freaking grip, Apollo. He thinks, Stop worrying about the questions. You know it's just a formality. You already did the training for the job, didn't you? They know you'd do the force justice; I mean, it's your--my last name! You can stop sweating now! His body, much to his chagrin, doesn't listen. He hates interviews so much. Knowing that someone's judging you like that? Completely nerve-wracking.
Okay, so, maybe you put your foot in your mouth, kind of, with the exploration question. And that super cheesy line at the end about finding what's really important?! What were you thinking?! How many times has that come out of a brown-nosing recruit's mouth? Geez!
Apollo finds himself balling his hands up into fists and he resists the urge to slam them into something. He remembers all too well the last time he'd hit an inanimate object out of frustration-- he was still paying for the repairs he'd done to that poor man's restaurant. How was he supposed to have known he was sitting next to the main support beam? He needs to calm down before that happens again.
"I'm Apollo Justice, and I'm fine," Apollo mutters, under his breath. It doesn't quite do the trick, so he does it again. "I'm FINE!" he repeats, louder, and it echoes down the hallway, making a few officers jump and scatter. Oops.
He heaves a long suffering sigh, and almost thinks about having taken the job when it was offered to him a few months back. It certainly would have been easier.
As soon as it crosses his mind, though, he instantly rejects it. He knows that accepting things like that would have left a bad taste in his mouth for the rest of his life. Proving your mentor's crimes to his face in front of his superiors, and then taking his position from under him in one fell swoop? Sure, Gavin had been guilty-- but he was a good teacher, and it felt... well, dishonorable to skip over everything like that. It was a really, really crappy mix of good and bad, and the conflicting emotions, coupled with how sensitive and damning the situation would be if word got out-- it just wasn't a good thing to build a foundation on. So Apollo waited.
And here we are, he thinks.
He's resigned himself to being sweaty and nervous, but the promise of a new start invigorates him some. He regains that bright spark in his eye as he strides down the exit hall, his movements full of purpose and hope.
